COMPETITION RULES

The following rules and guidelines for our club competitions are compatible with the requirements of the Photograph Federation of Long Island (PFLI), so that winners of our local contests can be forwarded to PFLI for adjudication at that level and are eligible for PFLI awards.  You can look at the PFLI rules here.

MEDIA

Competition submissions are either prints or digital images.

Prints may be in color or black and white and may be of maximum size of 16 x 20 inches mounted.

Digital Images must be in jpg (or .jpeg) format, they must be in the sRGB color space, have a resolution of exactly 72 pixels per inch (or dots per inch, dpi), must be sized to 1800 pixels on the longest side.

CATAGORIES

  1. Category A  is for photographers who have demonstrated photographic skills in a specific category that are superior to Class B members or who have met the requirements of III below.
  2. Category B is the  club’s entry level of photography.
  3. Category C (creative digital images) consists of color or black and white images in electronic format.
    • Creative images are the maker’s artistic interpretations of their original photograph(s).
    • Complete abstract images which no longer resemble any portion of the original photographic subject, or incorporate significant graphic designs.
  4. Category K consists of black and white images with at most one color included.

ELIGIBILITY AND CLASS ASSIGNMENT

Only those members whose dues are paid for the year may compete in the club’s monthly competitions. New and returning members will be assigned to Class B unless they have previously competed in Class A in this or another club. A new member may request assignment to Class A. Changes in class will only be made at the end of the competition year.

Class Assignment and Contest Records

  • The club will maintain a tally of the results for each competition.
  • A copy of the monthly results will be published on the club’s website.
  • A minimum of eight entries are required to qualify for the Photographer of the Year award.
  • A member’s annual score is computed by dividing the sum of the scores by the number of entries; i.e., by computing each member’s average score for the year.
  • The member who receives the highest annual score in a category is awarded Photographer of the Year in that category.
  • The Class B Photographer of the Year in each category will be moved to Class A.
  • In case of a tie, the Executive Board may assign more than one member to Class A based on their year’s average score.
  • Members of Class B who have scored 24 or higher three times in a category during the year in PFLI competitions will be assigned to Class A.
  • Once assigned to Class A, members must compete in that class in all subsequent competitions.
  • Members who have competed for two years in any Class A category, must compete in Class A in all categories.

JUDGING CRITERIA

THE PHOTOGRAPHIC FEDERATION OF LONG ISLAND (PFLI)

  1. Photographs selected from the club’s monthly contests are submitted to the monthly PFLI competition; photographs of the month are always included in these submissions.
  2. A rotating voluntary committee of three members will select both prints and digital entries each month for the PFLI competitions.
    • Except for the Photo of the Month, the selections are anonymous.
    • Only one entry per member per category will be submitted to the PFLI competition.
