Polarizers and ND Filters

Postby ekgarcia on Sun Feb 22, 2009 10:00 am

Polarizers and ND Filters: I was wondering if anyone uses these types of filters? Do they really make a difference? If they do what is a good brand to buy? or Is a $30 filter as good as a $100 filter? I know it all depends on what you are photographing, but any input would be greatly appreciated.

THANKS Eddie

Hi Eddie,

From what I understand, the most basic use of the ND filter is to protect your lens from damage.

The circcular polarizer reduces reflections and makes the sky or water bluer.

As in any optic situation the better the glass the less distortion. I like the Tiffen filters. They are located on LI but they are pricey.

If you are thinking of a polarizer, think about a THIN polarizer. No vignetting appears but it is expensive.

I'm told that you should not use a Polarizer stacked on top of a UV filter. It causes vignetting.

Hope this helps.

Howard.
